For Tesla, 2021 has been “a decisive year” and now “there should no longer be any doubt about the viability and profitability of electric vehicles”, can we read in the press release announcing the financial results of the automaker. Indeed, all the lights are green for the company led by Elon Musk, which delivered 936,222 electric cars in 2021 (+ 87%), including 911,242 Model 3 and Model Y.

This has him allowed to reap a turnover of 53.8 billion dollars (+ 71%), for a profit of 5.5 billion (+ 665%). Note that CO2 credits represented 1.46 billion in revenue for the manufacturer based in Austin (Texas), which has just experienced its first year of profitability, if we take into account the cumulative losses since its creation in 2003.

Two new factories to increase deliveries by 50%

Tesla plans to increase electric car deliveries by at least 50% in 2022.

And Tesla does not intend to stop there. The manufacturer wants to increase its production “as soon as possible” not only in “maximizing” pace of the factories already established in Fremont (California) and Shanghai (China), but also thanks to the launch of the assembly lines for the Model Y of its new factories located in Austin (Texas) and Berlin (Germany). At the end of 2022, Tesla could also announce the location of a future fifth factory.

Currently, the California plant’s annual production capacity reaches 600,000 units and the automaker believes it is capable of increasing it further, while its Chinese plant can manufacture more than 450,000 cars a year. Thereby, Elon Musk thinks he can “comfortably” exceed its objective of increasing its deliveries of electric cars by 50% in 2022, i.e. more than 1.4 million cars. This while new models, including the Cybertruck pickup and the sporty Roadster, are not expected before 2023. As for the $ 25,000 model, which Elon Musk had promised within three years in 2020, it does not appear for the moment not in the priorities of the company.

The supply chain still disrupted in 2022

It will be necessary to wait until 2023 for the launch of new Tesla models, including the Cybertruck pickup and the sporty Roadster.

However, the Tesla factories operated “below their capacities for several quarters” due to supply issues, although the semiconductor shortage has had less of an impact, and the automaker expects supply chain disruptions to continue into 2022.

At the same time, Tesla remains mainly focused on the development of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) autonomous driving software, since the profits related to the software should “accelerate” its overall profitability. It should be noted that the American manufacturer also benefits from other sources of income, in particular from energy storage.
