OL could go under the American flag with Foster Gillett, Jean-Michel Aulas could remain president

Olympique Lyonnais will hold a press conference on Thursday from 9:45 a.m. If the return of Alexandre Lacazette will be formalized, will the future organization of OL also be discussed? According to information from RMC Sport and L’Equipe, the eighth in Ligue 1 in 2021-2022 could soon pass under the American flag. Indeed, three American offers are in the race to buy 40% of the shares of Olympique Lyonnais, among which, that of Foster Gillett, who “would be about to take control” of the Rhone club according to L’Equipe.

At the beginning of April, Bloomberg revealed that at least six offers, from American and European investors, had arrived on the desk of the management of Les Gones.

Foster Gillett, the son of George Gillett (former owner of Liverpool from 2007 to 2010) is one of the three files still in contention with that of John Textor, owner of the Botafogo club (Brazil) and co-shareholder of Crystal Palace, and the Italian-American pension fund Iconic Sports, close to the basketball community and present in the capital of the reigning NBA champion, the Milwaukee Bucks, who would be particularly attracted by the presence of Tony Parker.

Three more years for Aulas?

According to L’Equipe, Gillett has a definite advantage: an overall offer of nearly 600 million euros to take over the shares of PathĂ© and IDG, who joined OL in 1999 and 2016 and which represent respectively 19.36% and 19.85% of the capital of OL Groupe. The two groups announced their intention to sell their shares last winter. The American investor could also take over part of the shares of Jean-Michel Aulas, and injected nearly 100 million euros into the capital of the club. Enough to be ambitious this summer on the transfer market and rebuild a private European Cup squad next season.

Foster Gillett had already approached the Derby County club this season for a takeover, having held a managerial role at Liverpool during his father’s ownership. This era will not remain as the most glorious of the Reds, in sporting decline and with a failed transfer policy, despite the blow Fernando Torres carried out in 2007.

Once this file has been completed, Jean-Michel Aulas (who owns 27.72% of the shares via his holding company Holnest) should remain president of the club, specifies RMC Sport. The team is advancing a final three-year lease to make the transition.
