According to information from Mayotte Hebdo, the impressive animal was captured by accident by fishermen last Saturday. They then brought him back to the beach.
It is rather rare to observe and fish for tiger sharks in Mayotte, this species certainly evolving near the coast but in depth. The island of perfumes also has one of the largest lagoons in the world where around twenty species of sharks play an essential role in the balance, attests the local media. No fatal accidents involving swimmers have been reported in recent years.
The tiger shark is classified as a “near threatened” species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
