Hidden sugars: these foods to avoid for better daily health

In 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched a worldwide call to reduce our consumption of sugars. Not the one contained in the fruit of course. The target is foods that contain added sugar and provide nothing but empty calories.

In France, the National Food Safety Agency (Anses), “recommends adults not to consume more than 100g of total sugars per day and no more than one sugary drink (with a preference for fruit juices) “.

Hidden sugars

And as the WHO points out, “Most of the sugars consumed today are ‘hidden’ in processed foods that are not generally considered sweet.” Like ketchup, one teaspoon of which contains about 4 grams of sugar. A can of soda? Up to 40 grams!

Severely limiting sodas is a good strategy to reduce sugar consumption. So prefer water, the only recommended drink that can also be provided by tea, coffee (without excess) and unsweetened infusions. As summarized by the health authorities on the mangerbouger.fr website, limit “as much as possible fruit juices, whatever they are, sugary drinks, sodas, even lights, and so-called” energy drinks “which are very sweet. . In any case, no more than one drink a day”.

A difficult challenge

For the rest, “it is important to reduce sugar intake”, insist Professor Jean-Michel Lecerf and Marie-José Hermant, in their book entitled Desire for health on the plate. Reference of course to the health impact of sugar consumption on conditions such as overweight, obesity, type 2 diabetes, dental disease, etc. “You have to learn to indulge yourself with less sweet foods. (…)”. However, the authors do not deny that “it can sometimes be difficult because sugar also has psychotropic effects”…
